Posted on ITVs ITVPlayer forum

I just posted this reply on ITVs forum. It's awaiting "moderation".

What a totally missed opportunity.

By climbing into bed with Microsoft by choosing Silverlight as the client technology (the commercials of which would be very interesting), ITV have instantly limited its customer base for ITV Player to only those viewers with modern Windows machines.

The BBC have been much more inclusive by choosing Flash for their competing iPlayer; it is supported by other operating systems, some set-top boxes and even games consoles. For example, visit BBC iPlayer from, say a PlayStation 3 and you'll be presented with an interface optimised specifically for viewing on that platform.

Come on, ITV! Get with the picture! If you base your business on advertising revenue, target as many viewers as possible!

In fact, I wonder if ITV Player has been a rush job to get to market as soon as possible after iPlayer? The re-branding of "Catch Up" to "ITV Player" is not complete, there is no ITV Player Help available, posts on this forum point to inconsistent behavior, testing appears to have been limited to a very narrow platform cross-section (even using the Moonlight OS Silverlight add on for Linux, the ITV player doesn't load in Firefox). It would certainly explain the Silverlight choice if Microsoft has offered support to the ITV board to get something to market as fast as possible.

Could do better.

Common-sense-ectomy.

I've just been asked to make it explicit to all staff that they are under no obligation to stand for the duration of stand-up meetings, unless they choose to do so. Apparently not a joke. So I'm off to my regular-meeting-deliberately-short-in-lenght-in-which-participants-can-adopt-any-position-they-like-in-a-supporting-caring-atmosphere. Actually - I'm more evil than that. Welcome to my new half-hourly-hopping-up-and-down-on-one-leg-while-carrying-heavy-weights-meeting.

Today's Vein-Throbbing-In-Forehead-Rant at Microsoft...

God-damn-it, Microsoft! Why does cancelling an operation in your software take as long as waiting for it to finish would have done? Idiots.

Career shift?

Using the xkcd.com geohashing application and selecting my most local graticule (Birmingham East), my birthday brings me out in the town of Silverstone, home of the F1 racetrack. Fate?

Sucker for marketing!

Well, despite my previous remarks about the poor language used by Asus on their EeePC home page, they obviously had some effect on me, as I bought one for Faye for her birthday.

Not only that, but having set the EeePC 900 up and watched Faye break it in, I was so impressed that I went straight out and bought one for myself Smile

They are awesome; perfect for just leaving by the sofa / bed for those moments you want to send emails, check product web pages, add blog entries (yup - this one included), or just sling it in your daddy-bag (Josh - you know what I mean Wink) for impromptu browsing on the move.

While I wouldn't type a novel on the compact keyboard (which I am getting used to), it is perfectly usable.

Yes - I'd reccomend it to anyone looking for a truly portable laptop. Well done Asus.

Oh, and its less than 1kg, so even women can carry it.

First Isaac Movie

So, here it is; my first short video of Isaac hosted on Flickr. I give you Isaac's First Christmas:

I'm absolutely chuffed how well the quality came out of Faye's little camera - it looks way better than the flash version in the original. I'm also amazed how much Isaac has changed in the last few months since Christmas! He's changing so quickly at the moment - standing up and shaking the bars of the stair gate (testing my DIY - see; he knows my weaknesses!), mimicking sounds and actions, it's amazing.

Anyway, up to now I have rarely taken videos of Isaac, but now I can share them on Flickr with friends and family, I might take more. Kepp your eyes peeled Smile

Un-PC-PC?

This passage is quoted directly from the global product page of the Asus Eee PC 900 (a slightly larger version of the previous Eee PC mini-laptop recently released), as it appears as I write this entry:
'8.9" screen does not affect the overall weight of the Eee PC 900, which remains below 1kg allowing children and women to carry it with ease.'
How nice of the Eee PC team to consider women, who, beautiful and frail, are evidently not capable of easily lifting heavy weights, like laptops that weigh more than 1kg, unlike man, strong and robust, who can lift such weights with ease.

Ahhhh - bless those women, eh, Asus?

Can I advise that in future you are more careful to appeal your target demographics, rather than insult them?

Even more photos of Isaac

I've uploaded even more photos of Isaac to flickr.

There are also some photos I took around Sutton Park while out walking with Faye, Isaac and Sue.
